Main features.

The color varies from a shade of white tending to straw yellow.

The taurine stone is a hard and compact limestone rock belonging to the group of marly calcarenites and dating back to the Miocene period. It is a typical rock formation of the Salento region, known above all for its malleability and part of the Lecce stone family.

This rock / stone has a rather homogeneous composition, the petrographic examination reveals that it consists mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of limestone granules (microfossils and fragments of marine fauna fossils, dating back to about six million years ago ), of calcitic cement, to which glauconite, quartz, various feldspar and phosphates are bound.

In addition to the substances listed above, there are finely dispersed clayey substances (kaolinite, smectite and chlorite), which, in the different mixtures and concentrations, give rise to different qualities of the rock, from the hardest stone for paving to the softer that well it is suitable for the realization of elaborate and scenographic works in stone.

Other features of our stone for indoor and outdoor floors.

Taurine stone emerges naturally from the ground or is barely covered by the earth. Once the soil has been recycled for cultivation and the site has been leveled and leveled, it is possible to create huge open-air quarries, up to several tens of meters deep and spread over the Salento area.

The stone is obtained in the form of parallelepipeds of various sizes.

The peculiarity of the stone is that its hardness and resistance, once extracted, grow with the passage of time, and in the consolidation the stone takes on an amber color similar to that of honey.

The color varies from milky white to straw yellow, the rock is compact and fine-grained, unlike carparo, another type of similar stone found in Salento but in different areas.

Taurine stone is used in both architectural and sculptural fields. Also appreciated in the artistic field, it has had international esteem thanks to the local craftsmanship that over the centuries has created the complex architecture of the Lecce Baroque.

Stone known since ancient times, in the entire Salento area there are dolmens, menhirs, statues and Roman constructions made and skilfully worked with this type of stone.
